The Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 demo is rolling out today, and it's a bigger deal than most demos. Capcom's free Prologue Demo lands on the Nintendo eShop on October 19 (October 20 in the UK), giving Switch 2 owners their first hands-on with the port ahead of its December 4 launch — and unlike most demos, everything you do in it carries over. Character, gear, progress: all of it transfers to the full game.

What's inside the Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 demo

The demo covers the opening stretch of the campaign, through Chapter 1-3 "To the Forest" — the prologue and the build-up to the Windward Plains. You get the full character creation suite (hunter and Palico), all 14 weapon types to try, and a handful of early quests to chew on. If you've played the version already out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, this is the same slice of the game.

That's a deliberate move. Your weapon choice in Monster Hunter is basically a personality test, and locking yourself into one for the first hours of a 60-hour game would be a rough sell. The demo lets you audition all 14 before committing a single point of progress to any of them.

Local co-op works — online doesn't

One detail worth knowing before you plan a session: the demo has no online multiplayer. If you want to hunt with friends in the Prologue Demo, you do it the old-fashioned way — same room, everyone on their own Switch 2 with the demo downloaded. Local wireless supports up to four hunters.

It's a genuine shame for a game built on co-op, but it matches how Capcom handled the demo on other platforms, and online unlocks with the full game on December 4. That full release supports full cross-play with PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC players — worth knowing if your hunting party is split across platforms, much like It Takes Two's Switch 2 upgrade finally sorted its own cross-play story this month.

Save carry-over is the real reason to download it

Most demos are disposable. This one isn't. Capcom confirmed that save data from the Prologue Demo transfers to the full release: your hunter, your Palico, your crafted gear, your progress through the early chapters. Nothing resets.

That changes the math. Playing now isn't just a preview — it's a head start. You can learn the new Boost Bracer mechanics (Capcom has been rolling out weapon spotlight videos showing what it does for the Switch Axe, Gunlance, Sword and Shield, and the rest), settle on a main weapon, and walk into December 4 with hours of progress banked instead of starting from zero.

30fps on Switch 2: what Capcom has actually promised

The big open question is performance, and Capcom has been unusually transparent. The Switch 2 version targets 30fps across the board. Docked, you get two modes — Quality at 1260p output and Frame Rate at 1080p output, both targeting 30fps. Handheld runs at 864p output, also 30fps.

For context, the PS5 version offers 40fps and 60fps modes at 4K output. So yes, the Switch 2 port is the compromised version on paper. But Capcom described the optimization work as "painstaking," and 30fps with all title updates included, wireless local play, and cross-play is a reasonable package for a handheld. If you're planning long docked sessions, our Switch 2 dock roundup covers the best options — and the demo is your chance to judge the frame pacing yourself before spending money, which is exactly why it's out six weeks early.

Digital pre-orders opened alongside the demo today, with Standard and Gold editions on offer. And if you're on the fence, note that Capcom just cut the price of the game permanently on other platforms, with new DLC bundles — the Switch 2 version launches into whatever that new normal is.

What's next: December 4, then Ascendance

The full Switch 2 release lands December 4 with everything the other versions have, including all title updates. Beyond that, the 2027 Ascendance expansion is confirmed for Switch 2 as well, bringing the Skybound Eyrie locale, Master Rank quests, and new monsters including the elder dragon Gundoraja — though you'll need Hunter Rank 40 and the "Awaking From a Dream" quest done to get there.

Bottom line: the demo is free, your progress isn't wasted, and it's the only way to answer the performance question with your own hands. The game has already sold over 11 million copies on other platforms since February 2025, and the Switch 2's install base is pushing 20 million — Capcom isn't doing this for charity. Download it, try all 14 weapons, thank me later.
